Inboard engines can be found in boats of all sizes from 12 foot
open fishing boats through to transatlantic liners. Small marine
diesels, marinised engines from makers like Volvo and high performance
petrol fuelled power plants all come under the description of
'inboard engine' and prices vary accordingly!
For most boats above a certain size there is no option other
than an inboard engine (or pair of engines) - outboard(s) of the
required capacity simply do not exist. For many smaller craft
there is the option. Factors such as cost of installation (two
inboards in the hulls of a catamaran would be more expensive than
two outboards), cost of running, anticipated use, life expextancy
and reliability all have to be taken into account.
One of the major advantages of small inboards is the fuel saving
over an outboard motor.
